This workshop will start at 9:00 a.m. with an indoor session at Strawberry Plains Audubon Center (SPAC, near Holly Springs, MS), during which we will review key identification points for the sparrows regularly wintering in our area. Included in this session will be study of recordings to learn and review the most important vocalizations used by sparrows in Mississippi in winter.
We’ll then head to the restored grasslands of SPAC, an excellent sparrowing location, where we’ll put our knowledge into action and practice what we’ve discussed. We expect to find 6+ sparrow species. We’ll also take time to study and appreciate other common bird species wintering in these grassland habitats. After warming up with a homemade lunch at SPAC, we’ll finish with an optional early-afternoon field trip to native and restored grasslands on private property in nearby Hudsonville, including a hunt for the beautiful and elusive LeConte’s Sparrow.
